What can you expect?

To help you understand what happens in our Supporting Children after Separation program, here’s a snapshot.

You call us and we meet with you

When you call, we arrange an appointment with you and a member of our intake team. This is called Intake Assessment. After this, the intake worker will book your appointment with the clinician for you to meet them one-on-one and discuss the concerns that you have with your child.

During this time, we’ll assess to make sure this is the right service for you, as well as assessing risk and explaining confidentiality.

The second parent

If it is safe and appropriate to do so, we then arrange a one-on-one appointment with the second parent to ensure we have as much information about the situation as possible. That way we can provide the best possible support for the young person’s individual needs.

After speaking with the second parent about your child and the concerns the second parent may have, and if the matter is deemed appropriate for child counselling, the next step is having a one-on-one appointment with your child.

Meeting the child

This is where when we conduct the first five counselling sessions with your child, tailoring the sessions to their goals and needs.

Feedback appointment

Once we’ve had five sessions with your child, we have a one-on-one meeting with each parent that has completed an assessment individually. Due to confidentiality requirements, it’s where the clinician discusses information that the child has approved to be fed back to the parents, as well as any suggestions to help continue the support at home.

More sessions with the child

After the feedback session, we continue with another five counselling sessions one-on-one with the child, adapting any goals or needs that may have changed over the first five sessions.

Additional feedback

Once the last five sessions are complete, the clinician will touch base with parents who completed an assessment and will offer any additional feedback or referral suggestions to ensure the family is feeling supported and empowered moving forward.

What can the child expect?

The outcomes we aim to achieve for the child include:

  • an increased ability to better understand and manage their feelings
  • decreased levels of stress and anxiety
  • addressing challenging behaviours
  • improved communication skills and problem solving
  • an increased ability to trust and form healthy relationships.
