The 2024 Australian Elder Abuse Conference is next Monday to Wednesday (22 – 24 July) at the Adelaide Convention Centre. There has never been a more important time to stand up to elder abuse.
In Victoria, the number of affected family members over the age of 65 has risen by 35% over the past four years, according to the Victorian Crime Statistics database. This increase starkly contrasts with the general population report increase of just 11% over the same period, underscoring the disproportionate rise in the abuse of older people. (This data is based on L17 police reports of family incidents.)
The Better Place Australia Respecting Elders Program is a specialist frontline response service supporting victims of elder abuse. Five of our specialists will be speaking at the conference next week on a range of issues, including:
- Older Women: Sexual assault and intimate partner violence
- IVO/AVO in elder abuse – Help or hindrance?
- Accessing elder abuse services: Governments, we need to talk!
- Primary prevention and ageism awareness
- Awareness of elder abuse risk in Residential Aged Care Facilities.
It’s time to help stop the silence about elder abuse and turn up the volume.
