Little girl missing her dad and how counselling helped her

Mum and dad separated and 100% of the care was with mum due to allegations of family violence. Their 7 year old daughter was struggling with the new circumstances and missing her dad. She was not able to have any contact with dad at all due to the allegations.

Mum approached Better Place Australia supporting children after separation program. This is a counselling program that develops healthy coping strategies for children of separated parents. It helps them navigate challenging periods of parental separation and family conflict.

The Better Place Australia child counsellor said, “She’s anxious, upset and confused, so she’s showing lots of different emotions at different times.”

The little girl was too young to understand why she couldn’t see her dad. The child counsellor employed several strategies to empower the daughter and help her manager her emotions. Learn the outcome of the sessions.

Better Place Australia supporting children after separation program

The supporting children after separation counselling program supports children during and after mum and dad separate and aims to empower the child to manage their emotions, become more resilient, and better understand their circumstances for improved well-being.

The counselling process:

  • ensures the child has the support to explore their emotions in relation to family conflict and separation
  • assists the child in building resilience and developing communication skills to allow them to effectively communicate their wants and needs
  • helps the child understand their emotions to empower them.

Feedback is given to parents with the permission of the child, due to confidentiality.
