Submission to the draft National Plan to End the Abuse and Mistreatment of Older People

Better Place Australia welcomed the opportunity to respond to the National Plan to End the Abuse and Mistreatment of Older People 2024–2034. As a specialist family violence service exclusively supporting older Australians, Better Place Australia has extensive experience in elder abuse prevention, intervention, and systemic advocacy.

This submission highlighted 6 critical gaps in the National Plan:

  1. The absence of an integrated engagement and support model
  2. Inadequate engagement with the public
  3. Diminishing federal funding for direct social support
  4. A fragmented view of families
  5. Not recognising the opportunity that existing funded family support services offer
  6. A lack of funding transparency and balance
