Newly separated parents worried about when they’d each see their son
Newly separated parents were facing unknowns in the care arrangements for their 11 year old son. They were worried about when each of them would see their son and felt overwhelmed by it all.
The parents initiated mediation with the Better Place Australia family dispute resolution (FDR) service quite soon after separating. After an intake appointment to ascertain the background and the context, Better Place Australia FDR team leader, Eliza, considered it appropriate for the matter to go into mediation.
Eliza shared, “When parents separate, there are a lot of unknowns. It’s a difficult territory to navigate and can feel very overwhelming. What these parents wanted to achieve through mediation was, ok, if one of them wants to go overseas with their child, what does that look like, what sort of agreement do they need, what were the guidelines around that?”
Eliza assisted the mum and dad to put together a parenting plan with clear care arrangements for their son.
“The parents wanted to trial the care arrangements and how it would work with school holidays, interstate and overseas travel, passports, etc.”, Eliza explained, “Then they wanted to come back and discuss how it went, finalise the care arrangements, and have more discussion about the other elements of their parenting agreement.”
Watch the case study video snapshot below where Eliza shares briefly how she worked through the care arrangements with them and what the outcome was.
