Better Place Australia services over 120 residential aged care facilities, providing counselling support for low to medium mental health interventions. We understand that in many circumstances older people are at a vulnerable stage in their lives as they adjust to residential care. We work with residents to improve their mental health and wellbeing.  Â
This research project explored the experience of transitioning into residential aged care from the perspectives of residents, family members, and aged care staff. The findings show that this transition is a time of increased psychological vulnerability and that everyday practices do not always adequately support residents’ mental health and wellbeing.Â
The project highlights the importance of involving mental health professionals during admission, adopting whole‑of‑facility approaches to relational care, and offering activities that better reflect residents’ diverse needs and preferences. Together, these insights provide practical guidance on how residential aged care facilities can better support people during this significant life transition.Â
