How we helped a separated couple experiencing tensions in communication
A couple with a 12 y.o. child separated. In a relatively short time, each of them repartnered. The separated parents were still trying to work through parenting arrangements so this new scenario made things even more difficult for them. The father initiated family dispute resolution (FDR) mediation through Better Place Australia. This case study explores how we helped the separated couple experiencing tensions in communication.
FDR practitioner Eliza shared, “The parents were really having difficulties communicating since they repartnered. Everyone’s emotions were high, everyone’s anxiety level can be high. Each of the parents were trying to navigate these new relationships and make that work.
“They also had to try and navigate their relationship with the other parent [former partner’s new partner]” shared Eliza.
The separated couple needed to know what parenting would like moving forward now that they were in blended families with their new partners.
Eliza shared, “It was further complicated by the fact that they wanted their child to spend time with their new step siblings as well. The key here was around communication being between the parents, not between the parent and one of the new partners, or between the new partners. It was about juggling the post separation parenting work and their communication going forward.”
The first few sessions were muddied by the fear of the partners intruding into that parenting arrangement.
What was the outcome?
