Workshops on Framing Age

We want to create a society that respects, values and celebrates everyone at every age.

Sometimes the way we frame our messages can inadvertently be disrespectful of older people or younger people. For example, it can be stereotyping individuals according to their age. This is a form of ageism, which is a known driver of elder abuse.

To shift ageist attitudes, we must begin by thinking, representing and talking differently about older people and ageing.

This 2 hour Workshop will increase your knowledge and skills to recognise and reduce ageist language, imagery and attitudes. It will teach us how to shift ageist attitudes by the way we communicate about older people and ageing.

The workshop uses the principles of values-based messaging and the Top Tips in the Framing Age Message Guide. This will deepen your understanding and skills to develop messages about ageing in a positive way.

Self-Paced Learning on Framing Age

We all want to live in a society that respects, values and celebrates everyone regardless of age.  We can begin by thinking and talking differently about people as we grow older.

This self-paced training shows us how to talk about age and ageing in ways that reduce ageist attitudes and behaviours.

It is based on national message research and the tips and principles in the Framing Age Message Guide.

The facilitator, Mark Chenery of Common Cause Australia, guides us through five self-paced modules:

  1. Using values and frames to reduce ageism
  2. The vision-barrier-action message framework
  3. Writing your message outline
  4. The top tips for messaging to reduce ageism
  5. Writing and reviewing a short message of your choice

It takes between 1.5 and 3 hours to complete the training, and is self-paced.

Community of Practice

The Community of Practice (CoP) on the Framing Age Message Guide provides a safe space to share knowledge and practice how to frame messages about age, ageing and issues that affect older people.

The CoP membership is open to graduates of the Framing Age Workshops and the online Framing Age Self-Paced Modules.

The members include a mixture of perspectives from local government to communications, and we work together to develop useful resources that can be shared with the network.

The CoP meets bi-monthly for 1 hour on Microsoft Teams. Mark Chenery, Common Cause Australia, attends from time to time to provide coaching and guidance.
